The Market by Safeway
concept to store opening in less than 7 months
WD collaborated with Safeway to develop The Market, their new small-format concept. Our integrated services provided the creativity, speed, and flexibility needed to open only six months from the initial concept meeting.
The Market makes neighborhood, quick-trip shopping convenient through edited products, wine, coffee, a Signature Café, and an extensive selection of prepared foods. Natural colors and materials, seasonal displays and café seating draw customers into the store. Simplified graphics and a well-planned customer journey make it easy to shop. Fresh foods, the cornerstone of the concept, are visible and adjacent to every service department and aisle.
WD ensured that the store design worked within the existing building’s constraints for the first remodeled location, offering expertise on materials, constructability, and environmental controls. Site surveys, permitting issues and RFIs were tightly managed and expedited on a daily basis to minimize impact on the construction schedule. We continue to assist Safeway with additional initiatives in leveraging their existing real estate assets.
About the first store, Steve Burd, CEO of Safeway, said, “We’ve reduced the center-store variety for the smaller store by more than 50%, which required radical thinking, yet we’ve still increased sales over the store that had previously operated there.”
The second location, in the lower level of a condo building, is almost twice the size of the first store. While still an edited center store selection, the location also offers its urban customers a full sushi bar and coffee beverage menu, in addition to its wood-fired pizzas and Signature Cafe sandwiches.
